Mission Statement
We are the Radical Rosie's aiming to smash the patriarchy one gender stereotype at a time. Out mission is to educate the community about the effects of gender stereotypes and how those stereotypes can affect a person's mind and body.
Project Need
Gender inequality is an issue that has been relevant in society for quite sometime. The patriarchy must be destroyed in order for all genders to attain the equality that is deserved. Males are often always seen as the aggressor towards females, but gender inequality is not just a female issue, it concerns all genders. It is not only important to teach males how to respect women or any other gender affiliation, but it is vice versa. There is a lack of appreciation of a whole person.
|
One short term impact that we expect from this project would be for all genders to hear relatable stories and information about how to smash the patriarchy and how they too can defy gender stereotypes.
How can you get involved???
Processs |
You can spread the word by being engaged, participating in activities, and improving your mindset of the equality of all genders. You can also take part in our book club to get educated on important issues within our community and beyond. Your involvement will help us in achieving our goal by spreading the word and improving the mindset of our youth on equality of all genders.

This year we met different days throughout the week but mainly on Mondays and Thursdays for 30 minutes. During these meetings we discussed our ideas for the whole year and ways in which we can get the community involved. We broke the year up into two parts. Our first step was to meet and brainstorm. Then we would plan our
Team Events:
Civic Engagement
We expanded our project beyond the walls of our school by hosting a book club and interacting with our followers on social media. We were able to connect with people within our community and supporters online. We made our events open to the people in our school and engaged them in many activities. Overall this has been a very successful year and we did our best to provide a space for people to have a safe space and learn about Women Empowerment.
Outcome
This year was full of events that our group all loved and enjoyed but within creating each event there were some difficulties. Since we are a mixed group of seniors and juniors it was difficult to come up with a balanced schedule because we all had different classes and more. As we kept communicating with each other we were all able to come up with a schedule for everything. As a group we knew that we wanted to create activities so that our community can interact with and even learn from them. The activities were not only fun but we also created them to educate and spread awareness on the effects of gender stereotypes and ways in which we can do something to reduce the problem within our community. So at the end of the day we came up with great ideas to get our community involved and spread awareness on these issues.
Our first event of Redefining Love for Valentine’s day was a success. We gathered quotes related to redefining love such as Agape, Philia, Storge, and Eros. Agape is selfless love, such as the love for strangers, nature, and or faith. Philia is friendly and affectionate love or as “brother and sisterly love”. Storge is the familial love, natural or instinctual affection. Lastly Eros is passionate love such as the modern construct of romantic love. We decided to do this for this year’s Valentine’s day because we believe that there is more than one type of love. We thought that we can inform our peers on the different types of love on this day such as the love within a friendship and more. So we decided to create valentine grams that had quotes relating to the different types of love and gave them to several classrooms. While they were passed out to the students, we were able to inform them on each type of love.
The Women’s Day event was also very good, the topic we were focusing on this year was Represent the Underrepresented. This was a topic on educating and informing our peers on the women who have not been represented as much as of today. We also wanted to inform them in ways to show women empowerment and to represent those special women in our life. During the presentation we had several activities and discussion questions to keep it interacting. In a portion of the presentation we had a few minutes to share with one another and shout out the most important women in our lives and just give them the recognition they deserve.
Our book club this year did start a bit later than what was planned due to several occasions. Even though we did start it late we are enjoying it so far. This year we are focusing on the book, Boys Will Be Human, by Justin Baldoni. This book is about the guidance of boys embracing their feelings, thoughts, and fears. This year we wanted to do a boy’s perspective since last year we did a girl’s perspective. We believe that it would be good to know a different perspective and bring awareness to it as well since it is not talked about as much. Overall we believed that they would be a way for everyone to express themselves and share ways in which they can make a difference.

Reflection
This year things have still not gone back to normal. It's like we are still adjusting in person school. In the beginning it was a little difficult to figure out events or activities we should do. Our goal was to do at least one event a month. We had a list but things happen and time passes fast. But we were able to go through a few. We paired up with a few events that King Drew had already organized.
The first event we did was for February we wanted to give a different meaning to Valentine's day. We came up with a theme “Redefining Love”. Traditional Valentine’s day is a day that is celebrated by couples. We wanted to give a small gift to students to show them that Valentine’s Day is not just about romantic love. It's about all sorts of love with family love, friendship love, and yourself love. We made little cards with different messages about the different types of love, not just with a partner. For example there was one that says “It's about those who have good hearts, are full of love, living their life with honest and beautiful intention, and treating others with respect”. To the card we attached a piece of candy to give them a treat. We asked about 12 teachers if they could give them out throughout the day. We attached a message to the teacher as well explaining who Radical Rosies were and what was the purpose of the cards. And a message they would tell their class on Valentine's Day. Our goal was to show that Valentine’s day is about all love.
Our second event was in March on national women’s day month. We partnered with the Women’s day committee at school. On the last Friday of March we were able to have a whole school day to talk to students about women. We got the theme of “Represent the Underrepresented” . We had slides that included different women that were underrepresented. We also included the different places where women are not represented or overlooked like in work places and in general; society. We included questions to make it more interactive with the students. And to encourage students to participate we gave out candy and prices. What we initially wanted to do was Radial Rosies to have our own topic. We wanted to focus on the positive and not all about the bad things that come with being a woman. But all the great things that come. If we could do it all over again we could have insisted on the committee. We were able to educate students about the women being underrepresented.
In the month of April we partnered with MultiCultural and had a booth outside where we were able to educate students. We had different posters about gender roles, gender stereotypes, and patriarchy and would ask students if they knew what it meant. If not we would educate them, on the back of the poster we had the definition. We had a poster they would sign and write ways that they will smash the patriarchy in their culture. And those that participated, we gave them gifts. As a prize we had two books as raffles. It was a fun experience. We were able to talk to a lot of people. It was interesting to hear about all the ways that they were going to smash the particary in their own culture.
We also did a book club that we were hoping would include more boys. We picked the book “Boys will be human” By Justin Baldoni. We didn’t want to make it seem like we were only focusing on women all the things we go through. But the things that boys feel. And how at times they find it hard to express themselves because society has told them that they can’t cry because it makes them cry. We were hoping that this book would grab the attention of boys to come and join but unfortunately it didn’t. But we did get girls and we are learning that we need to be there for the boy and show them that it is okay for them to cry and express themselves.
If we would do it all over again we would manage our time better and get things done before time. We were doing things last minute that would get done but in a rush. We would also do more promotion about the activities to get more students to participate. The most important thing would be to speak up about women’s day and have that topic we knew we would be great at teaching. To have better communication with the other committees.
