Project Need |
Gender inequality is an issue that has been relevant in society for quite sometime. The patriarchy must be destroyed in order for all genders to attain the equality that is deserved. Males are often always seen as the aggressor towards females, but gender inequality is not just a female issue, it concerns all genders. It is not only important to teach males how to respect women or any other gender affiliation, but it is vice versa. There is a lack of appreciation of a whole person.

How Can You Get Involved? |
You can spread the word by being engaged, participating in activities, and improving your mindset of the equality of all genders. You can also take part in our book club to get educated on important issues within our community and beyond. Your involvement will help us in achieving our goal by spreading the word and improving the mindset of our youth on equality of all genders.

Process
This year we met at different times during the week, to come up with different ideas on things like events and planning. It was difficult for us to set an exact date for meetings but we made it work and were able to plan stuff efficiently. In our meetings, we would work on event planning, updating our website and social media, and work on things that are needed for our events.

Radical Rosies Book Club
We interacted with Radical Rosie's Book Club Members where we read and discuss a specific topic related to patriarchy, sexism, feminism, women, toxic masculinity, and/or women of color in relation to Gabi A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero. We created a safe space where members could discuss topics that are usually avoided when having conversations about what women of color go through in their lives.
Empowerment Fair
On April 1st, we created a both for an event at our school that was partnered with K/D Mega Project. We created a booth in where we would let students know what our mission was and how they could get involved. We would explain to them our book club and would also give them the option to sign up. Not only did we tell students about who we were but we also made sure that they had some fun by playing our trivia game that we created.
Women's Day
Women's Day is a day that our school takes very seriously and this year we decided to take part in it. We all got a classroom to facilitate and we picked the topic "See the world through our eyes". This topic is all about talking about what women experience in the world and how we view the world as women. This was an opportunity not to only engage all students in the problems that come with gender inequality but also tell them a bit about the Radical Rosies. This was an experience that we loved, and look forward to doing it again!
Civic Engagement |
We expanded our project beyond the walls of our school by hosting a book club and interacting with our followers on social media. We were able to connect with people within our community and supporters online. With us all transitioning back into "normal life", it was a struggle to directly engage with others and have a consistent interaction. We tried our best by doing as many events as we could, but it was difficult. Not only did we have a hard time transitioning but many others around us did as well, so it was difficult to get everyone together. Overall this has been a very mentally draining year and we did our best to provide a space for people to have a safe space and learn about Women Empowerment. |
Outcome
This year has been a year to remember for all of us, our lives are barely starting to slowly come together after these last few years that have affected us all in some sort of way. This year our group tried our best to do all that was possible while taking into consideration that we were all still trying to figure out what was going to be this year. When we first started we did not know how many times we would be able to meet since we are a group of juniors and seniors with a lot going on. We did not know who we would partner with or with who we would want to get involved. We also were unsure as to what we were doing, but we made the best out of it and kept going. We had to take into consideration the COVID precautions for the safety of ourselves and others. Even though this year did come with many challenges, we as a group feel like we succeeded. In our first year returning back to school, we did well as a group in trying to do as much as we could. In the beginning, we had some difficulty adjusting to the new ways, but we managed. We not only got involved in our community but we were also able to involve many students. This year we got involved in a couple of events and hosted our in-person book club. Through all of these events, we were able to engage with people in our community and encouraged students to get involved.
Our in-person book club has so far been a success. There was some difficulty starting it because our school life, outside life, and health were all over the place. Our book club created a safe area where students were able to express themselves and their thoughts on what they were reading. They discussed and got to know each other better. Some of the discussions revolved around being able to connect with the main character and compare their life with ours. The book, A Girl In Pieces, by Isabel Quintero discussed topics on gender roles, gender stereotypes, identity, and feminism. The main character struggles to live in a Mexican household with toxic masculinity and she struggles with what others say that makes her Mexican enough or not. Some of the topics discussed were how gender inequality works inside a household. Students were able to speak up about problems like this occurring today and what should be done about it. An example given was how women are raised to cook, clean, take care of children, and attend to the males in the house, while men are raised to play more sports, work, and support the family. Men typically are not allowed to show any type of emotion or femininity because it isn’t considered “manly”. This is what our society has become where both women and men are treated unequally in their own homes. We were able to get a total of 10 ladies to join our book club and discuss in what ways things could change. This got us one step closer to our goal of being about to inform our peers about the problem going on and coming up with solutions.
Our women’s day event taught our classmates about everyday problems that people go through. The topic discussed was “See the World Through My Eyes” where discussions were held and students had a free space to be able to talk about their thoughts. We talked about gender inequality, gender roles, and sexism that is seen in our everyday lives. Both males and females participated in these discussions and some solutions were made. There were some people who disagreed with one another but no one was judged and their opinions were heard. This was a great experience because people were able to connect the way women and men face inequalities in their own life. Each person was honest about how they felt about the topic.

Reflection
This year was for sure a bit difficult to accomplish a few of our ideas. Due to the pandemic and returning back to in person learning it was hard to get people involved. It was a bit hard to get used to all the changes but we got through them step by step. We started off with gathering ideas and equipment for our events. The equipment included: Gabi, A Girl in Pieces book for our book club, posters, a game wheel, and more.
Our first event was something that directly impacted the students at our school. In our school we have a day to discuss and educate our classmates on women and gender inequalities. We joined as a team and got to discuss the topic called See the World Through Our Eyes. This is a topic about the struggles, opportunities, and how we as women see the world. This was a way for us as a group to talk about the inequalities and the hardships that women face and how we can solve them. With this experience we were able to prepare for more events.
Our second event was in partnership with K/D Mega Project. On the day of Empowerment fair we gathered a lot of ideas to present to the students. We decided to introduce ourselves first and tell them what Radical Rosies is and our mission. We discussed the troubles of gender inequality, stereotypes and ways in which they can join. There were a few ways to interact with the students. The first way was a game wheel. The questions included true or false questions and multiple choice questions that were all about Women’s history. We figured that through this, students would be able to test their knowledge on Women and even teach them about new things that they have never heard of. If they got the question right they won a key chain that has a positive phrase since our goal is always to motivate people and show them that they can do whatever they put their mind to. The second interaction that we had was that if the students wanted, we would take them a picture with a Polaroid camera with our Radical Rosies photo frame that we made ourselves. Once they got the picture they got a label and wrote something positive about themselves. This was a way for them to remind themselves to spread positivity and to love themselves for who they are. Lastly we were able to give them either one of our bookmarks or a button with our logo so they can remember us and remember the ways in which they can help with gender inequality.
This year we were able to continue our book club but there were some difficulties. At first we were having trouble on how to put it out there to let people know about it. But at the end we came up with a solution and got to start on the book club. The book club consists of 10 people. We have our meetings every Friday after school but when we can not do it after school we do it during lunch. This year the book club is based on Gabi, a Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero. We give the members specific parts to read before the meeting and when we meet we all have a discussion on our thoughts and opinions. Our goal is to create a safe space in which members feel comfortable in voicing their opinions and can talk about subjects that are usually avoided. Our first meeting was great, everyone participated and we had a great conversation about the book. We are so happy that we got to create a safe space to talk about how we can relate to the book and express ourselves.
We had more plans for this year but due to several things and getting adjusted to in person school it was hard. What we would have done differently if we had to do it all over again would be doing the podcast and having more book club meetings. Many of the members in our group have busy schedules with school and other extracurricular activities. In our podcast, we would be reading and discussing topics that the book,” Hood Feminism” by Mikki Kendall addressed. We would have conversations with these topics that we and our audience connect to. However, it was difficult to find a day where everyone or mostly everyone could meet. Now that we have gotten this experience we know what to do differently to be better next year. We sure did learn a lot and had fun. We didn’t get to do as much as we wanted but we are still proud of our progress, we can not wait to do this again next year!
